Cantaloupe, Fruit, Watering

Cantaloupe from the garden

Yesterday, we harvested 6 cantaloupe from the garden. I picked one 2 weeks ago, but I picked it a little early. I could tell right away because it didn’t smell like a cantaloupe. I let it ripen on the counter, but it wasn’t very good. Lacked taste. I sprinkled a little sugar on it and that made it tolerable.

Had one of the six we just harvested and it was good, but they are all cracked. I found out that is because I am watering them too much. It has been 110 deg. regularly so we have been watering 10 min. in the morning. I am going to cut that back to every other day and see how the rest are in a couple of weeks.

It is so hard to tell how much to water. Last year I watered every 3 days for 15 minutes and the plants really struggled. I had always been told you want the soil to dry our between waterings but when it is 110 degrees out there and you have a raised bed then I assume it drys out pretty fast.

July is the worst month. If we can get our garden past July then the little plants will be happier.
