Tomatoes Can Grow Year Round

In a sense Phoenix has a year around growing season and tomatoes can grow year in and year out. There are two growing season. I will explain more of that in another post. There are two times when tomatoes have a hard time in Phoenix, in the middle of the summer and when there is a frost. During the summer it is hard for the blooms to set. Sometimes you have to help your plants with a bloom set spray. You can purchase this at a garden center.

The other time is when there is a frost. A frost will kill your plant completely if it is not protected. You can try to protect it by covering the plants with a sheet over night. Be sure to remove the sheet in the morning. If your plants are in a pot, you can move the pot indoors or close to the house.

If your tomatoes manage to survive the winter, you can trim it back a little and let it grow again. The same plants will produce another bumper crop of tomatoes from spring to fall.
